Historic Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks

Tourists flock to Tarpon Springs to see the famous sponge docks too. Yes, sponges – pulled from the Gulf of Mexico, sponges were once the largest Florida industry. Sponging even surpassed citrus and tourism.

The sponge industry in Tarpon Springs bloomed because of one thing, location. Starting in the late 1800’s, sponge boats filled the Gulf of Mexico. Crews would look through glass bottom boats and hook sponges with long poles.

Soon sponge harvesting became a booming industry with outside interests. Greek Americans even imported divers, diving equipment, and suits to collect as many as possible.

The once small and quiet sponge docks started to transport started to one of the biggest harbors in the world, New York City. However, by the 1940s the sponges were wiped out by blight and Tarpon Springs Florida was no longer the sponge capital. The sponges returned 40 years later along with the title of Sponge Capital.

One of the oldest tourist attractions for folks living in The Meadows is the Sponge Exchange. Starting in 1908, the Sponge Exchange was founded as a common place for spongers to meet and store their catch while they waited for weekly auctions.

Today, you can visit the Sponge Exchange for shopping, dining, and an array of events.
