Memorial Day can trace its roots back to the Civil War as Union General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic made a proclamation in 1868 to honor the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers.  The holiday grew over the years and decades as cities and states began organizing and declaring their own holidays dedicated to memorializing those who gave their life in service of America.  Congress made this day of remembrance an official holiday in 1971, declaring that the last Monday in May every year would be host to Memorial Day.
