The best places to retire offer great locations, comfortable housing, resort amenities, plenty to do, and built-in friendships. It’s a new beginning for many. And for some, that new beginning in a Florida 55+ community delivers a second chance at love. That’s the case at The Meadows in Tarpon Springs, Florida, where a string of community functions brought two homeowners together in a twist of fate nobody saw coming.
It’s a love story that took Melissa “Missy” Garrett and Britt Proctor by surprise.
A community Wine Down Wednesday event was their meet-cute.
The duo took their relationship public during a community-organized Halloween golf cart parade.
And the New Year’s Eve party at The Meadows clubhouse became the backdrop for their engagement announcement.
That same clubhouse hosted their July 2026 wedding.
“There are friends I have made at The Meadows that will always be my friends. They’ve been by my side, and they’re very happy for us.”

It’s a sentiment felt beyond their neighbors at The Meadows.
“It couldn’t be any better. We’re very comfortable and happy with each other. Our families are very supportive. It’s a win-win for everybody involved,” explained Britt.
Neither moved to the active adult community expecting to find a partner.
But fate and a Wine Down Wednesday event changed that.
Finding the Best Place to Retire at The Meadows
Missy spent most of her life in Georgia, but envisioned herself settling down in a 55-plus community in Florida. The Gulf Coast appealed to her. She also needed a pet-friendly community for her dogs.
She visited The Meadows (which has a dog park) in 2020 to tour homes for sale. She had found it – The Meadows was the start of her next chapter.
Britt’s path was different.
He and his late wife, Jill, lived on the east side of Florida before touring The Meadows. They visited the community for a weekend, and one thing stood out. People waved.
“You drive through, and most people wave. They still carry that custom here.”

It was a small gesture that said a lot about The Meadows.
Coping with Loss & Change
Britt and his wife eventually purchased a home at The Meadows in 2022. But sadly, after years of failing health, Jill died a couple of years after relocating to the Tarpon Springs home.
Britt, now widowed. Missy, living alone.
Both living in the same community without really knowing each other.
Both facing similar life struggles. Missy lost her 35-year-old son in 2024 and said she had withdrawn from many of the social activities she once enjoyed.
Britt and Missy had crossed paths at The Meadows clubhouse, pool, and community events. They waved, said hello, but they had never really talked.
That eventually changed at Wine Down Wednesday.
“We both were in a grief state. And then The Meadows activity coordinator started Wine Down Wednesday. And I thought, ‘maybe it’s time for me to get out of this recliner and get myself back out,” explained Missy.
What is Wine Down Wednesday?
Wine Down Wednesday is not exclusive to this Tarpon Springs community or even Florida.
It’s a midweek social tradition across the U.S. Wine Down Wednesday celebrates the halfway point of the workweek with a glass (or 3) of wine.
At The Meadows, Wine Down Wednesday is one of the most popular weekly social events. The idea is simple. Residents gather at the clubhouse, bring their own beverage or snacks, and spend time talking with neighbors.
For Missy and Britt, that was exactly what they needed.
Finding Your People at The Meadows
“I found Wine Down Wednesday to be very enjoyable. It started really reviving me after losing my son.”

For Britt, it was a chance to meet people in the community and expand his network of friends. And one Wednesday, he met Missy and a simple conversation about Thai food changed everything.
Missy mentioned she had never tried Thai food and wouldn’t know what to order. Britt volunteered to go with her. But neither considered it a date.
Conversation came naturally for the duo.
That first lunch led to more time together. Britt shared his photography. They visited local parks and realized how much they had in common. They discovered shared interests in music, camping, and outdoor recreation. Most importantly, they enjoyed each other’s company.
“They say when it’s meant to be, it goes smoothly. It’s not forced.”

Making It Official at The Meadows Community Events
Missy and Britt initially kept their relationship private.
By Halloween, the couple took their new relationship public at the annual Halloween golf cart parade. The parade is a favorite at The Meadows. Homeowners dress up in costumes, decorate their carts, and parade through the streets.
It was one of the first times residents saw them together outside their usual Wednesday night gathering. Neighbors noticed.
A few months later, another community event marked an even bigger milestone.
Britt proposed on New Year’s Eve before heading to the community clubhouse for the New Year’s party. Missy tried to keep the new ring discreet.
“Everybody was seeing through it,” chuckled Britt. “It only took about ten minutes before someone latched onto the ring. There’s been nothing but positive reinforcement from everyone in the community.”
Wedding Day at The Meadows
On July 11, 2026, Missy and Britt were married at The Meadows clubhouse with family, friends, and neighbors there to celebrate.
The sense of community made the clubhouse a fitting place for the wedding. Wine Down Wednesday brought them together, Halloween made their relationship public, and New Year’s Eve at the clubhouse made it official.
Now, the clubhouse had become the setting for their wedding day.
The Meadows let Missy and Britt decorate the clubhouse. It was truly a community event. The Meadows also has licensed ministers in-residence, two professional DJs, and an experienced caterer.
“Not only were we blessed to be able to celebrate our marriage with friends and family, some of our friends took an active part in making our day even more special.”

This Florida retirement community already knows something about celebrating lasting relationships. The Meadows Nifty Fifty social club brings together couples who have reached 50 years of marriage. The group meets monthly to share love stories and connect over their lasting romances.
Missy and Britt are just getting started. Their story is a reminder that love does not have an age limit, and neither does the possibility of meeting someone new.
Their Next Chapter at The Meadows
The community offerings at The Meadows still play a big role in Missy and Britt’s life together.
The Meadows clubhouse offers easy access to recreational activities like the fitness center, tennis court, and get-togethers. Missy and Britt go to karaoke, spend time at the swimming pool, attend holiday celebrations, and get together with neighbors for driveway parties. But they do not do everything together.

Missy enjoys Sip and Paint and Music Mania Bingo. However, they agreed early that becoming a couple did not mean giving up their individual friendships or interests.
That balance is one part of the appeal at The Meadows for Missy and Britt. They can share a community lifestyle without giving up the interests and friendships they enjoy on their own.
Wine Down Wednesday remains part of the couple’s routine. They continue attending and now make a point to welcome new residents to the group. The event that brought them together now gives them a chance to do the same for someone new.
Missy and Britt see The Meadows as part of their long-term plan.
Their story is a great reminder for anyone looking at Florida retirement communities, especially in historic Tarpon Springs. Lifestyle, location, and cost of living all play a role in finding the right place to call home.
However, making the move to Florida doesn’t mean you have to slow down. In fact, it might be a new beginning.
Missy came to The Meadows looking for a friendly, 55+ active adult community where she could meet people and build friendships.
She did.
She just happened to meet Britt, too.
