Campground Guests Rally Together for Point Sebago Engagement

Joey Fitts ' mrriage proposal caught on camera at Point Sebago Resort in Casco, Maine.

“This place is special. The people are special, but there’s one really special person…”

Joey Fitts

There’s a great lakeside camp in Maine. It’s special to many, welcoming generations of families to Sebago Lake.

The summers have become a tradition. The guests become family. And the support among those guests becomes palpable at Point Sebago Resort.

Don’t believe places like this still exist?

Watch Joey Fitts’ June 2024 proposal at Point Sebago and you’ll understand.

It’s not a private moment between two people.

The proposal became a community event at the Casco, Maine campground that boasts a lakeside resort lifestyle and amenities. From the planning to the big moment, the tight-knit Point Sebago crowd wanted to be a part of it.

Maine Summer Camp Marriage Proposal

“Will you marry all of us,” Fitts asked Miranda Mack-Jackson, referencing the Point Sebago audience. “And will you marry me?” asked Fitts in front of the couple’s toddler son and a packed room during his public proposal.

The groom-to-be enlisted Point Sebago neighbors to help plan, decorate, and build the poster carried by the couple’s son, River.

“Everybody works together here. We’re an extended family,” explained Fitts, who owns a vacation cottage (manufactured home) at the lakeside resort and 18-hole championship golf course

Everybody played a part in the big moment too.

The crowd even goaded Fitts chanting “on your knees” while professing his love to Jackson and presenting her with a blue Ring Pop. He had previously given Jackson a blue sapphire that she already wears on her ring finger.

The Point Sebago traditions continued after the big moment.

Fitts arranged for singer Sierra Harris to perform the couple’s song. Harris is also a staple at Point Sebago Resort. The American Idol alum grew up spending summers at Point Sebago and now returns periodically to perform as part of the resort entertainment

The Heart of Point Sebago Resort’s Community

“It’s the Sebago family, all of you people. You’re all so special to all of us.”

Joey Fitts

The Resort sits along Maine’s second-biggest lake. However, it’s not the glamping tents, designer cabins, or resort amenities that make it so special. According to Fitts, it’s the people who transform this Maine campground into a one-of-a-kind experience.

Fitts joined the Point Sebago family four years ago. He took a job with Outdoor Comfort Center which installs sunrooms for cabin owners at Point Sebago. Fitts does the skirting on those cabins along Maple Bay.

“I’ve been here every day since – in the winters and summers working. I do their skirting, siding, and roofing, so I meet every family that moves here.”

Now Fitts lives in the community six months out of the year and knows everyone.

“We’re friends with them outside of Point Sebago too, during the winter months. So they all wanted to be part of our engagement.”

The couple credits the people with making Point Sebago feel like home.

Wander the resort and you’ll see. Guests even call River the “Mayor Point Sebago.” He even has an official staff name tag with the moniker.

“They’ve all helped us raise him. They’ve all supported us,” says Fitts.

Owning a Lake Cottage at Point Sebago

Buying a vacation cottage at Point Sebago Resort was an easy decision. Fitts spends the other six months in South Paris, Maine. Commuting to Point Sebago was an hour each way from South Paris.

Now living within the campground community means there’s no drive, he’s always close to his son and the best lake in Maine.

“We got a boat down here. All our friends have boats. Our favorites are the concerts and entertainment. There’s Cove’s Got Talent – it’s amazing to watch the younger kids and adults compete.”

Fitts admits new leadership at Point Sebago in the past two years has attracted a younger crowd to the Maine resort. He credits the balance of new ideas and Point Sebago traditions with making summer camp special.

“New management brought back the I Won It t-shirts and happy hour, which was a big deal.”

Dreaming of a Point Sebago Wedding

Now Fitts hopes management brings back one more Point Sebago favorite – weddings.

Joey and Miranda have their hearts set on a Point Sebago Resort wedding in July 2026. The lake life is so important that the couple hopes to exchange their vows while standing in the water.

“We’d like to have our friends, family, and the Sebago family set up on the beach to watch.”

Fitts wouldn’t be the first to get married at Point Sebago Resort. Before 2020, the resort was a popular Maine wedding venue for couples with Sebago Lake ties.

Lakeside Maine Wedding Venue

Couples can still get married at Point Sebago, but they’ll need to plan the logistics themselves. The Maine campground venue offers beach access and rental space, but not a wedding coordinator.

Small weddings have been held at The Island Lodge. The lodge is on a private point and surrounded by water on three sides. It sleeps 22 people spread out between seven rooms and 4,000 square feet. Guests can bring in caterers if they register with the main office beforehand.

Large groups also qualify for a discount when they book ten or more cabins. Contact the resort by phone for group bookings or to reserve event space like the Pine Room or Grove Tent.

Wedding planning hasn’t officially started yet. But there’s one certainty in their future. Fitts and his fiancé will continue to call Point Sebago home and count all the longtime resort guests as family.
