Labor Day weekend marks the end of summer for most people.
At Big Pine Key RV Park in the Florida Keys, it’s the start of something better. It’s one of the most underrated times to vacation there, likely due to hurricane season. But the possibility of storms doesn’t mean the Florida fun stops after Labor Day weekend.
The holiday weekend kicks off fall in the Florida Keys—bringing sun, sea, and the kind of fun families return for every year. It’s a chance to squeeze in one last summer escape or start a new Florida fall tradition.

A Long Fall Florida Keys Weekend Worth the Trek
The allure of islands like Big Pine Key is easy to see.
Families arrive on the island with kayaks strapped to trailers, fishing gear packed tight, and bikes ready to hit the local trails. The weather is still warm. The water is still clear. And the pace of life slows down just enough to enjoy it all.
Staying at Big Pine Key RV Park means you’re close to everything. Spend the day paddling through mangroves or snorkeling the reef. Watch the sun dip behind the resort docks. Fish right from the park. Or simply relax by the water.
“There’s always something going on,” says Jill Gawne, who loves the resort amenities included in a stay at the oceanside RV resort.
“If you don’t want to leave the park, you don’t have to.”
Book Your Fall Vacation
You don’t need an RV to stay at Big Pine Key RV Park. The waterfront resort rents travel trailers with a view and new vacation rental cottages that sleep up to six people.

Fall Fishing Season Kicks Off in The Keys

Labor Day weekend also marks the start of prime fishing season in the Florida Keys.
“This is the closest outlet to the reef,” Jill explains about Big Pine Key’s location. “That’s where everybody likes to fish.”
Guests at Big Pine Key RV Resort can fish right from the park or head to Bahia Honda State Park, one of the most scenic spots nearby. Jill’s partner, Rick Middlebrook, spends hours fishing beneath the bridge there.
“It’s always busy,” he says. “I just think it’s so cool—the history, the view.”
It’s one of the couple’s favorite day trips.
Big Pine Key isn’t the only fishing hotspot during the fall. Anglers from across the state head south for the Take Stock in Children Backcountry Challenge in Key Largo from September 26–28, 2025.
Even if you’re not competing, it’s the perfect time to cast a line—or just cheer from the shoreline.
Extend the Summer Feeling on Big Pine Key
Fall in the Keys doesn’t mean sweaters or early sunsets. It means more time outside. More chances to connect. And more reasons to return.
Big Pine Key guests like Jill and Rick use their electric bikes to explore the area. The snowbirds ride to Winn-Dixie for groceries or to Kiki’s Sandbar for live music and a meal. They load their bikes in the truck and head to Key West when they feel like venturing further.
Each year, the resort improves. The memories grow. And the friendships deepen.
“We’ve watched the workers’ kids grow up here,” Jill says. “The beautiful thing is that they’re not on their phones, they’re always outside playing and being kids, doing kid things.”
Make Your Labor Day Celebration a Tradition
Big Pine Key RV Resort isn’t just a place to stay. It’s a place to start your fall the right way. Labor Day weekend brings out the best of the season, from festivals and fishing to golden sunrises over the water.
